This guide provides information on how to set-up and use EndNote.

What is EndNote?

EndNote is reference management software that helps you collect and organize citations for your research. Along with citations, EndNote can often import and organize PDFs.

Among EndNote's most popular features are:

  • Gathering (importing) citation information directly from the databases you're searching.  
  • Organizing your citations (& Pdfs)- for example, if you're working on multiple research projects, you can group your citations by project so they are easier to find.
    • In many cases EndNote will also find the Pdf so all your sources can be organized in one place. 
  • "Cite While You Write"- This is the ability to Insert citations in your paper. The in-text citation rules and reference list is automatically generated for you. 
  • Sharing Citations- when you're working with a research partner, or on a group project, everyone needs access to the latest list of sources you're citing. EndNote lets you share and edit citation groups.

EndNote has a few products that work together to expand the way EndNote makes citing your papers easier. 

EndNote Desktop

EndNote Desktop is the tool you use to store and organize citations, find Pdfs, and insert the citations you've gathered into your paper (i.e. "Cite While You Write"). 

Also known as EndNote Library

EndNote Web Free

EndNote Web is an online service that allows you to store, share, and organize your citations from any computer. 

If you want to remotely access your EndNote Desktop, you'll need to sync your EndNote Web with your EndNote Desktop. Syncing EndNote Desktop to EndNote Web is also how you Share Citations with a research partner or group. 

 
EndNote Click  Free

EndNote is a web-extension that scours the web searching for PDFs.  When EndNote Click finds a Pdf it goes to your "My Locker."

My Locker 

Free My Locker is the holding place for PDFs found by  EndNote Click.  You will want to send PDFs from your Locker to EndNote Desktop. EndNote Desktop will also gather the citation information from the uploaded PDF. 

EndNote Web free This is the only version of this product available for students using Chromebooks! The full software is not compatible with Chromebooks due to their lack of a local drive. Though limited in functionality, EndNote Online allows you to find, collect, and share references, as well as formatting a paper or bibliography. 

Register an EndNote account using your Lipscomb email here. A confirmation email will be sent to you. Follow the instructions in this to complete your registration. You can now start saving references into your EndNote Library.

Additional Help

EndNote can take a little while to learn. Don't be discouraged if you have to practice using it. Remember, there are plenty of places to find help:
