Generative AI

What can you use Gen AI for at Lipscomb?

Each professor at Lipscomb has his/her own policy on the use of Gen AI, and these policies will be stated in the course syllabus.  Please ask your professor if you are unsure about whether or not your use of Gen AI conforms to the policy.  Any time that you use Gen AI in your studies, you should be ready and willing to explain your use of AI to your professor.  Save AI chats or document your use of AI in case you are asked to produce evidence.

Things you should not use Generative AI for at Lipscomb:

1. Cheating on exams--Unless you are specifically told to use AI, using it while taking an exam would be considered cheating.

2. Plagiarizing--This would include representing someone (or something) else's work as your own.

3. Creating Fake References--Since AI can hallucinate sources, only use references that you can independently verfy.

4. Avoiding Critical Thinking and Learning--This would make your college degree a waste of money.

The point of getting a university degree is to learn how to think critically about the world around you.  If you are are letting AI do your thinking for you, then you may get a college degree, but you will have a hard time competing with AI in the workplace because AI will be better at your job that you are.  To get the most out of your education, consider carefully all of your uses of AI.  Evaluate all AI output and think of ways to improve it.
