Welcome to the LiGHT Common Read for Fall 2018/Spring 2019 - Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race. With this shared reading program, we are encouraging everyone at Lipscomb University to join together to read and discuss a book in common. We hope to foster a greater sense of community through a shared academic and social experience; encourage an exchange of ideas among students, faculty, and staff; increase awareness of academic, cultural, and social issues, and promote various disciplines across campuses.
During this academic year, some faculty members will be using Hidden Figures or parts of it in their class reading assignments and activities. We will have book clubs and a variety of public events that tie into it as well. A highlight event will be the author's visit to campus on February 19, 2019!
We chose Hidden Figures for our second Common Read because it is an inspiring story that celebrates the role of intellect, determination, and unity in overcoming sexism and racism. This story can be approached from many perspectives in such disciplines as women's studies, ethnic studies, math, engineering, technology, history, and sociology. We believe the story will greatly resonate with students, faculty, and staff. This story also illustrates the importance of family, education, mentors, and the power of everyday acts of resistance.
